‘Science and the Arts’ Basin
Jules Brateau, about 1892
Leading a pewter revival during the late 19th century, the Parisian artist Jules Brateau won awards at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1889. Brateau revisited the Temperance Basins of Briot and Enderlein with his dish ‘Science and the Arts’. He engraved his moulds in a similar manner, but updated the design for the Art Nouveau market with a lighter touch and more sinuous ornament. The basin depicts allegorical figures representing sculpture, architecture, painting and music.
