Hector Guimard (1867-1942) was a leader of the Art Nouveau movement, exemplified by sinuous ornament based on natural forms that was fashionable throughout Europe from about 1895 to 1905. He is best known for the entrances made in cast iron painted to simulate bronze which he designed for the Paris Metro from 1900 onwards.

Fireplace surround of cast iron, the sides slope inwards, the top is concave cast with highly decorative art nouveau ornament forming a hood over the fireplace.
