An early 19th century confection from the collection of A. W. N. Pugin - an association of several genuine 16th century objects. The upper section with the shell is 16th century Spanish, the lower section, including the figure of Salome with the platter and executioner, are 16th century German or Swiss. The figure of St John the Baptist, however, may be 19th century. On the knocker, the kneeling monk and pierced dolphin decoration is 16th century German, but the remainder is 19th century. The plate is decorated by a chiselled Landsknecht (knight) and lady.(07/1994) |
