Little girl's half-mourning dress of unlined grey linen, hand-embroidered in black. The dress has a round neck and short magyar sleeves worked with staggered running stitch in black, and the garment is cut without a separate bodice, but with the skirt gathered at the waist sides. The waist sides and hem are decorated with faggotting in black, and the chest and back with matching lines terminating in Greek key motif worked in back stitch; a butterfly (one of Amy Brock's favourite motifs) is worked in back stitch in black just beneath the neck front. The garment fastens at the back of the neck with hooks and bars.

Object history
Worn by the donor, Eileen Amy Brock (b.1915), in connection with the death of her father, William Claude (Will) Brock, a private in the British army serving in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq). He died of heat stroke in Basra on 21/07/1921. The dress was made by Eileen's mother, Amy. (Information on Will Brock's death from the IWM, which has his letters)
