The lilies and roses that surround the cross are symbols of Christ, particularly relating to His purity and suffering on the Cross. The scheme suggests that the gate secured a funerary chapel.

Object history
Marian Campbell writes (1997) that the skull suggests that this gateway was for a funerary chapel.
