Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
After the prolonged and destructive Thirty Years War of 1618-48, Europe split into a Catholic south and a Protestant north. This led to a massive expansion in the use of religious imagery in the Catholic area. People wore religious medallions of all kinds, sometimes bought at pilgrimage sites, and sometimes to commemorate specific events.
This pendant, showing the Baptism of Christ on one side, was a christening gift. On the back it has the name of the child's godfather; Franz Schwertafsek.
