By the close of the 19th century the partners in J. Drew & Sons, whose business had been established in 1844, were John Drew, Samueal Simmers Drew and Ernest Drew, with retail premises at Picccadilly Circus and Leadenhall Street, where in addition to their works at 62 Hatton Garden they are listed in 1897 as manufacturers (to the Royal Fammily) of portmanteau (leather travelling bags), dressing bag, luncheon and tea basket manufacturers, wood fibre trunks, bag makers and ivory goods merchants. The firm exhibited inventions in travelling equipment and dressing and travelling bags at the International Inventions Exhibition, South Kensington of 1885.

Two candle lantern, silver, London hallmarks for 1890-91, mark of Samuel Summers Drew & Ernest Drew
Physical description
Lantern, silver, with scalloped lid and two hinged doors which open to reveal two cylindrical candle holders behind a removable glass draught screen which rests on a pireced gallery. Benath the gallery a small swivel compartment probably intended to hold matches. An inner container fitted with a spring screws into the base of each candle holder, the candle being pushed upwards so that the flame emerges through a circular aperture in the tip of the outer casing. Hinged prong hooks on back and inside lid.

  • Engraved on the lid: two crests, one a boar's head couped for Gordon, the other a stag's head above a coronet (unidentified), flanking Chinese characters (believed to represent the owner's name).
  • Engraved on the doors: The owner's last two names in late Victorian Gothic script depending from larger initial letters, "Panmure" on the left hand door and "Gordon" on the right hand door for Henry Panmure Gordon.
  • Engraved on the back: a fragment fgrom a valse described as "Die Bohemian" (possibly "The Bohemian Girl", a popular opera composed in 1843 by M.W. Balfe and translated into almost every European language).
