Pair of Candelabra
1860-1882
Place of origin |
When they entered the Museum in 1882 they were believed to date from the late-eighteenth-century. Yet although the female figures that support a spray of lilies in an urn seem inspired by designs of the 1780s and 1790s, the garlands that wreath the base of the V&A candelabra reflect the mid-nineteenth-century taste for intricate, floral ornament. It is possible that Jones placed these pieces on a mantlepiece. A photograph from around 1890 shows a similar pair of three-light candelabra on a chimneypiece in the interior of Hamilton Place, London, a residence built for the wealthy banker Leopold Rothschild.
