Physical description

1.Diameter 4.5 cm 2.(closed)12.7 x 6.5 x 2 cm
1. the school medal, which is circular, is of white metal, and is suspended from a pair of horizontal bars connected with blue ribbon.
The obverse is inscribed with the words "REWARD OF SUPERIOR
MERIT", and decorated with a wreath of palm and laurel within a border
of scrolls and laurel; the reverse is inscribed with the words "FOR
REGULAR ATTENDANCE" within a ribbon-tied wreath of laurel and a
border of scrolls and laurel. The two rectangular bars are decorated with arabesque lines of foliage, and the upper one is mounted on a stick-pin. The hinged rectangular presentation case (2) is made of wood, the exterior covered with navy blue leatherette; the lid is lined with pale blue sateen, and the box with navy blue velveteen (recessed to take the medal) and card covered with turquoise paper. The case fastens at the front with a gilt metal clasp, and the top of the lid is stamped with a gilt inscription "APPROACH ROAD SCHOOLS. N.E.

Object history note

References:

Awarded to the donor's mother, neé Maud Davis (born 15/01/1889), who attended the Approach Road Schools. The family was of Huguenot descent, and lived in the Spitalfields and Bethnal Green areas.
