Girl's dress of unlined russet velvet. The dress has a round neck and short inset sleeves, to which are tacked a three-quarter collar and small triangular cuffs of quilted white cotton, trimmed with cutwork and edged with machine-made lace. The bodice front (which falls from a yoke) and the skirt are gathered to the self fabric waistband, and the garment fastens at the bodice back and beneath the true left arm with a combination of metal press studs and hooks and loops.

Physical description
Girl's dress of unlined russet velvet. The dress has a round neck and short inset sleeves, to which are tacked a three-quarter collar and small triangular cuffs of quilted white cotton, trimmed with cutwork and edged with machine-made lace. Object history
The vendor (a descendant of the artist John Crome) married in Cairo early in WW2. With the war & this place of residence in mind she began to collect traditional English clothes for the children she hoped to have: Dinah & Simon Prewin were born in Cairo in 1941 & 1944 respectively, and lived there for some years.
