This brooch is set with hardstones (black marble, mother-of-pearl and green jasper) cut and set in the shape of a white rose on a black background. The white rose was often a symbol of mourning. Set against a black background, it made a suitable jewel for women to wear as part of mourning dress.

Florence was a major centre for the production of pietra dura work (mosaic in hardstones). Jewels such as this made popular souvenirs for tourists visiting the city.
