This plain gold ring is marked for Thomas Sewell I who registered his first mark on 20th January 1846 and further marks up to 1st June 1866. He had been apprenticed to Thomas Watson in 1818. Thomas Watson was one of the most prominent of Newcastle silver-smiths at the time. Thomas Sewell was Warden of the Newcastle company of Goldsmiths some 15 times and is reported not to have missed a single meeting. The assay office in Newcastle was established in 1702 and closed in 1884.

Gold wedding ring, Newcastle upon Tyne, c. 1865. Mark of Thomas Sewell I.
Physical description
Plain narrow gold hoop with marks for Newcastle upon Tyne. The marks consist of the sovereign's head, a crown, 18, a castle mark and TS. There is no date letter.

The hoop is slightly mis-shapen with signs of wear.
