Rings were an important part of the traditional dress of both men and women in 19th-century Italy. Like all Italian jewellery, they often had symbolic, as well as decorative, value. The heart suggests that this was a betrothal or marriage ring.
It was bought as part of the Castellani collection of Italian Peasant Jewellery at the International Exhibition, Paris, 1867.
