The hearts and key motifs on this ring suggest that it was probably a betrothal ring. The gift of a ring was part of the traditional betrothal in many countries in Europe before the 20th century, when the betrothal, or formal engagement, was often more important than the marriage ceremony itself.
This example was bought as part of the Castellani collection of Italian Peasant Jewellery at the International Exhibition, Paris, 1867.
