Ring

1840-1860 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The cut-down settings on this ring and the deep setting of the central stone both suggest an 18th-century date. But it was actually made in the mid-19th century. Italian traditional rings, like many other kinds of traditional jewellery, commonly used 18th-century designs and techniques long after they had gone out of fashion among the urban classes.

It was bought as part of the Castellani collection of Italian Peasant Jewellery at the International Exhibition, Paris, 1867.
