This ring was bought as an example of traditional Maltese jewellery at the International Exhibition, London, in 1872 for one pound.

Rings were an important part of the traditional dress of both men and women in the 19th century, and often had symbolic, as well as decorative, meaning. The crucifix attached to the hoop makes this ring an aid to prayer. Rings like this were also used in Italy and the Catholic regions of Germany.

Gold ring with a cast crucifix attached along the length of the shank, Malta, 1860-1870.
Physical description
Plain gold band ring with two bars, one longer than the other, at right angles across the band. A small cast figure of Christ is attached to the longer bar, with the body lying along the length of the ring. The shorter bar has slanting ends and is engraved with the letters ‘INRI’.
