Chest
15th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Chest of wood and cuir bouilli with iron mounts. It has an arched top with a layer of waterproof leather and three locks. It also has punched trees on the lid bands and an unidentfied coat of arms. The chest stands on four integral feet and has an arched top. The wooden core bears the remains of a cuir bouilli covering (leather rendered waterproof through soaking and boiling) secured by wrought iron straps. The lid has two hinges and iron bands with square terminals decorated with stamped stylised trees. The body of the chest retains much of its cuir bouilli beneath panels of iron lattice work secured by rivets. The lobed border of each panel is also decorated with stamped trees. The front carries three square locks, the central complete with panels of gothic tracery and foliage, the left restored with crude strips and the right stripped of its decorative lock plate.
The arched top to enable water to run off, helped by the waterproof layer of cuir bouilli, and the three locks suggest that this chest was used for travelling.
