Sugar Bowl

1759-1760 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Sugar bowl with a bulging upper section of the body terminating in a cast and applied moulded rim. The bulge is chased with Rococo scrollwork and two Rococo cartouches, the outlines enhanced by matting. The lower section of the body is lightly embossed with fluting, some outlines of individual flutes being enhanced by matting, within a broad chased wavy border decorated with matting. The feet are formed of scrolls and scrolling leaf-motifs, topped by a shell. The handles are formed of two scrolls whose meeting point is emphasised by a motif of a single spray of two leaves. Both handles and feet are cast and applied. The edge of the lid is decorated with guilloche; the lower tier of its two-tiered dome is chased with Rococo scrollwork roughly similar to that on the body, and the knob is formed by a cast and applied motif of asymmetrical strawberry leaves topped by four strawberries, the largest forming the knob. The rim is separately made.
