A tripod basin stand of turned and carved beechwood, English, 1825-1850

A tripod basin stand of turned and carved beech, painted in white and green, the three supports in the form of elongated S-scrolls, rising from a triangular base and supporting a basin ring with a wide shelf above it to one side.

This basin stand has long been related to other bedroom furnishings supplied by Thomas Chippendale to David Garrick and his wife for their villa at Hampton, to the west of London. It is, however, at least thirty years younger than any of Chippendale's pieces and may have been bought to supplement the furnishings by Thomas Carr, Mrs Garrick's solicitor, who bought the house after her death in 1822.

The basin stand was part of a large donation of furniture from Garrick's bedroom (plus an additional press bed).Inventory numbers W.21 to W.32-1917. The bed had already been donated to the Museum (W.70-1916). In 1994 the Museum was also give one of the pair of small bookcases from this room (W.14-1994).

This small basin stand dates from about 1825 to 1830 but has for many years been associated with furniture made for the actor David Garrick and his wife by Thomas Chippendale Sr, for their Thames-side villa at Hampton. It was presumably bought from an unknown maker by Thomas Carr, who bought the villa and some of its contents after the death of Evan Garrick in 1822.
