Box

400-600 (made)
Place of origin

The form of this box relates to somewhat larger reliquary boxes that were excavated in Kuqa on the Silk Road, and which have been dated to the 6th-7th century. A long tradition of making turned, painted boxes continued in Central Asia, modern day Afghanistan, and northern India in the Islamic Middle Ages, and was carried on into the modern times. Because of the natural perishability of wood, boxes from this period are rare. Another similar example appears in the David Collection, Copenhagen (Inv.no. 2/2003)
