Hat of plaited straw, with a broad black silk band over the crown, and two black silk ribbons for tying. Circular, with broad high brim, turned down at the edge. The hat has a brown cotton chintz lining, and a radiating arrangement of ribbons reaching to the edge of the brim. Worn by the women of the Vierlande, a district on the Elbe river near Hamburg. German, 19th century.
