Stomacher of black velvet on a backing cloth of flannel, worn on festival and holidays by the women of Vierlande, a district on the Elbe river near Hamburg. German, 19th century.

Embroidered with silver gilt thread and spangles, further enhanced with golden tinsel and pieces of red facetted glass. The dense embroidery depicts a vase from which emerge flowers. The embroidery is slightly padded with thin card. Beneath this, the initials B.K.M.S. are embroidered in red cross-stitch.

Above the embroidery are two bands of brocaded ribbon, woven in yellow silk and silver gilt strips. The ribbons have a wavy floral design with gilt lace trimming to both edges.
