2. STITCH SAMPLERS
Hand-knitted cotton decorated with silk ribbons
English, late 18th to early 19th century.

Each sampler shows a variety of stitch patterns which might have been used for accessories, baby clothes and shawls.

Lace knitting was developed in the later 18th century as open-weave and net-based fabrics became fashionable. The finest hand-knitted lace was not produced until the 1840s.
