Place of origin |
Square shawl of machine-made net decorated with applied motifs of bobbin lace and needle lace. The bobbin lace is worked in clothwork outlined with bundles of threads and some raised woven edgings, and is decorated with some half stitch filling. Simple linking bars and zigzags of narrow bobbin woven tapes. Some of the larger flower heads have diaper fillings worked with a needle and areas of drochel net are decorated with needle made rings. The needle lace is confined to floral chains forming parts of the outlines of alternating scallops.
The shawl is decorated with three concentric rows of looped ribbons which link with bows here and there, forming irregular compartments decorated with sprays of flowers. The lower deeply scalloped edge is defined by two interlacing scrolling lines ornamented with tabs containing floral sprigs. At the highest point of each curve is an elaborate spray of flowers.
