Place of origin |
Tapestry woven in wool on a cotton warp. On a bright yellow ground is a central medallion from which radiates tongues of flame and branches of leaves with brightly coloured butterflies. The medallion is divided into four sections. One section has a black ground with stars and a cartouche containing four human profiles. One section has a white ground with geological specimens. One section has a black ground with an animal with a rayed circle for a head. One section has a stone coloured ground and a branch of a predatory type of flower. Above the medallion are horns flanking a smaller medallion. To the left, one above the other, is a perching bird from which leaves seem to grow, a serpent and a fish. Scattered over the whole ground are clouds and stars. The colours are bright and luminous and consist of blue, green, yellow, brown, pink, orange, red, black and white. The tapestry has 12 warp threads to the inch and 5 to the centimetre. Tabard's registration number 3653.
