In 1968 Ralph Lauren launched his hugely successful menswear line "Polo by Ralph Lauren", named after a sport that conjured up visions of aristocratic good living and old money.
His clothing has world-wide appeal, combining English taste with American dash. His talent lies in his ability to rework traditional shapes and materials in a way that is wearable and new. His understated style and casual chic is unfussy and intrinsically American. He was one of the first to produce "designer sportswear"
