Paris/Tokyo: Jap (Kenzo Takada), about 1971
V neck sweater knitted in striped stocking stitch with short, ribbed sleeves and ribbed neck edge and welt.
Kenzo was one of the first Japanese designers to create a strong impact in the West. His modern, bright, multi-coloured knitwear has been especially influential.

Object history | Kenzo Takada (b.1939) is a Japanese designer and founder of the Kenzo label. Born in Japan, he studied fashion at Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo before moving to Paris in 1965. Takada opened his first store, Jungle Jap, in 1970 at 43 Galerie Vivienne. This garment was produced under the 'Jungle Jap' label. The label was later re-branded as Kenzo, as the term 'Jap' is considered offensive. |
