SWEATER AND TROUSERS
Machine-knitted wool
French: Sonia Rykiel, about 1972

The striped body of the sweater in fine wool contrasts with the chunky yarn used for the sleeves - both are knitted in stocking stitch with the 'wrong' side showing. There is a wide band of ribbing at the waist and the cuffs are also ribbed. The wide, straight cut trousers, made from jersey fabric, have a side zip and two pockets each fastened with a button.

In the early 1970s Sonia Rykiel turned knitwear inside out and carried on to make a feature of seams and 'unfinished' edges.

'Hailed as the Queen of knitwear and called the Coco Chanel of our age, Sonia Rykiel's expertise lies in moulding jersey into the sensuous timeless clothes that women the world over want to wear' (Liz Smith, the London Standard, 30 July 1985.
