Tapestry

ca. 1530 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Tapestry woven in coloured worsteds on flax warps. The subject apparently represents a royal court; in the centre a king and queen are seated within a hall having an open arcade at the back, through which a landscape is seen with buildings and figures. Before them a little girl is sitting on the floor, with a bird perched on her finger. To the right, near the king, is an old man seated at a table reading a book, while two pages hold flaming torches over him. A number of ladies and gentlemen are standing around; one of the latter is pointing towards a page who stoops in the foreground to pick up a book. There is a narrow border of fruit and flowers, with lions' masks at the corners.
