Orphrey
1360-1390 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Vertical panel from an orphrey, linen ground in two layers embroidered in silver-gilt thread and coloured silks in underside couching and split stitch with a little raised work. On the upper part, saints Helen with a cross and James the Less with a club, in the lower part saints Paul with a sword and Faith with gridiron ad book. The panel is cut, so that the lower legs are missing. The pairs of saints stand under ogee arches with twisted columns, in the spandrels there are pairs of birds with coloured plumage. The panels have symetry in their colouring and in the placement of the birds which are alternatively facing inwards and outwards. The underside couched gold background is worked in differing diaper patterns. In different areas of the panel much underdrawing is visible in areas of wear. Unlined, with colours very fresh on the back.
