Object history
The series was given to the Museum by Mr George A. White, who had bought them from a bric-a-brac salesman in Norbury, South London, in 1943.
Historical context
Transformation playing cards made by amateurs were popular in the first half of the 19th century. See Jean Hamilton: Playing Cards in the Victoria & Albert Museum, 1988, p.10, cat 178, p.66, cats. 184, 188, p.67. This series of amateur drawings seems to be related to this pastime.
