Fichu

ca. 1810 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Fichu of bobbin lace and embroidered net. Composed of a piece of embroidered net turned over on itself to make a centre panel of double thickness around which a wider border of bobbin lace has been attached. The net has a pattern of eight-pointed stars or flowerheads needle-run in cotton scattered over the ground. The bobbin lace has shallow scallops in each of which stands a bird looking over its shoulder with a stance rather like a penguin. The ground is scattered with regular flowerheads and dots. The fichu is curved to shape so that the bobbin lace conceals the embroidered net, lying one layer above the other so that the birds are facing in opposite directions.
