Coat

1925-28 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Cream women's coat made of knitted wool and rayon blend yarn. The rayon threads form a vertical stripe pattern of angular formal motifs. The coat is mid calf length, straight, and has a low waisted wrap over a fastening with 2 self covered buttons. The front is faced back with knitted rayon and this is also used to trim the top of the pocket on the right hip. There was originally a small collar similarly faced, but this has been entirely covered with a wide straight lucca lamb collar. Bands of the same fur trim the cuffs of the long tight sleeves and are stitched round the bottom of the coat which may have had a band in the rayon knit, now turned up inside.

COAT Machine-knitted wool and artificial silk (rayon) English or French, about 1925 This calf length coat is cut and sewn from a length of double knitted fabric in stocking stitch. The subtle 'art deco' design relies on the contrast in texture between the matt wool and shiny rayon. The coat fastens with two buttons covered in the same material. The collar, facings and pocket and hem edges are made up from ribbed rayon used horizontally and vertically. Bequeathed by Mrs G. M. Speare. T.15-1971(1985)
