Place of origin |
Woman's ensemble of blouse, petticoat, overskirt (or apron) and cap. The blouse is of coarse white linen, loom embroidered in red cotton. Except for a border of this loom embroidery on the front of the hem of the bodice, decorated with trimming of red crochet, the bodice is plain, finely pleated into the neck, which is bound with a narrow band of linen with the red loom embroidery. The bodice fastens at the back with two cloth covered buttons. The broad sleeves set into the bodice have their upper surfaces covered with red, stylised plait forms, but are left plain just above the wrist, where the linen is tightly gathered, covered with another band of decorated linen, and frills out into a wide cuff decorated with more loom embroidery. Red and white plaited ties are provided to fasten two button-hole stitched loops.
The petticoat is of plain red cotton, machine sewn. The threads are unevenly spun, giving a checked appearance to the material. The waist is simply turned over and sewn, with black elastic run through to gather it.
The overskirt is of coarse white linen, loom embroidered with red cotton. The linen is pleated into a plain waistband. The loom embroidery covers nearly all the skirt in three deep borders of stylised plait design, edged by a narrower border suggesting a pattern of scalloped lace. The border stretches almost round three sides of the hem, curiously leaving a plain section on the upper left side. Plain red worsted ribbons are attached as ties. The skirt is trimmed on three sides with torchon bobbin lace in white and beige-pink.
The cap is part of a headdress of pink cotton embroidered with black and red cotton in satin, stem, and overcast stitches, in a geometric pattern of squares and V shapes. The headdress is made up from one broad strip of material, which forms the front, and rom 4 narrower strips which form the back. The edges are overcast in green silk.
