Shawl

ca. 1865-1870 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Double-sided shawl woven with a reversible design of palmettes set in a large overlapping scale pattern, in red, green, yellow and grey-green. This design covers the whole of the shawl except for narrow side and end borders, and woven end pieces. The two ends are narrowly hemmed, and with a thin fringe of purple, brown, yellow and white silk. The warp is of pink-buff silk, and with two sets of warp threads. The weft is of red, green, grey-green and white wool and yellow silk.

The weave is a basic double cloth with the red and the green alternating on the face. The paler green wool and yellow silk are carried between the cloths, and used more sparingly on the surface to decorate red or green indiscriminately.
