Shawl

ca. 1855-1865 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Shawl of woven wool. The pattern is confined by long panels ending in ogee arches. In between are sinuous cones with elaborate fillings, and within the largest panels are three contiguous cones behind a flowering plant. Many of the detailed fillings look like exotic feathers. The centre of the shawl is half filled with an elaborate pattern, half plain black with invasions of leaves.

The shawl is finely woven on a red silk and wool warp, dyed black at the centre and in colours for the end panels and fringes, and with green warp for the selvedges. The weft is red, pink, green, blue, yellow, black and white. The end panels are elaborately woven and one contains initials, possibly C and J.
