Shawl
ca. 1855-1860 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Shawl of woven wool, in pink for the body, and printed in black, at the centre, and red, green, white, blue, yellow and black for the ends. There is a selvedge of green twill.
The design shows a central square on a black ground, with arcading around the edges and 'ribs' crossing over the centre. In some of the spaces there are stiff fleur-de-lys shapes. Around the centre is a narrow band of meander on a red ground. The same band is also used to mark off rectangular compartments at the sides and at the ends. These compartments are filled with elongated 'cone' shapes and 'tree' patterns. One particularly group of long cones has hollow rosette and ring shapes superimposed on it. Around the whole shawl is a narrow border of rosettes in medallions. At either end are woven end-pieces.
