Shawl

ca. 1835-1843 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Long woven shawl with the border 16 inches deep with guard stripes. With a bizarre design of vases, obelisks and pedestals with shallow basins, all sprigged with flowers, set against plain areas of scarlet, black, lemon yellow and buff. Other colours are white, green, and grey blue. Narrow border along the side of the shawl with a vase between architectural blocks with short pilasters, is repeated as the upper and lower guard-stripe, and from the vases in the lower guard-stripes flowers project into the main area of the border.

Borders are sewn to a silk centre, a deep golden yellow colour, and a plain yellow silk fringe is applied at the two ends.

The side of the main border are cut, turned back and sewn with out a woven selvedge, so the borders were possibly re-used in the present form of the shawl. Woven in wool, silk and cotton 3/1 twill.
