WOVEN SCARF SHAWL, long.
English; Towler, Campin & Co, Norwich.
Design registered 16 August 1844.
Here woven as a scarf with only patterned ends, the design registered disposed this pattern for a square shawl, the centre filled with trails and sprays of semi-naturalistic flowers. This was one of 54 designs registered by Towler, Campin & Co in 1844.
This style, the flowers sometimes springing from rococo ornament, was popular from 1844 to 1846. Even at the height of its naturalism, with poppy plants shown with one seed pod almost bare of petals, the leaves of the plant were filled with flowers as well as veins. This style was not exclusive to Norwich. John Morgan wove shawls like this in Paisley, and Charles Swaisland produced some fine printed versions.
