Place of origin

Plain woven linen embroidered with dark brown silk in running stitch. Possibly from a pillow. Egypt, Mamluk, ca, AD1250-1500. The linen is undyed; approx 21x17 tpc (sys 1 x sys 2); approx. 1mm thread dia. It is decorated with double lines of embroidery that zig-zag across the fabric. At the point of each zig-zag is a cross-like motif. A length of linen (187mm in width) has been sewn between two pieces of pink, plain woven silk (approx. 30x30 tpc). At various points along the silk lines are created by using a wider, silk thread. The pink pieces have been sewn to the linen and a whip stitch, in undyed linen thread, at the edges ream ins. In more recent times this seam has been reinforced with a white synthetic thread. The piece has staining and some holes.
