Place of origin

Fragment of a plain woven, undyed linen cloth with a twisted warp fringe at one edge, possibly from a towel. The border of the cloth is decorated with blue silk, embroidered in counted thread embroidery in double running stitch over two threads.

The embroidered pattern shows a repeated motif of paired birds, standing either side of a tree within which are two further pairs of birds, one large and one small. Below this is a band with an inscription in lozenges. At the edge of the cloth, above the fringe, is another narrow geometric band.
