Textile Fragment

1250-1517 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A fragment from a textile, in plain woven, undyed linen (Z-spun) with blue silk embroidery in double running stitch. The dye has not taken evenly across the blue silk. The fabric was possibly cut from a larger piece when constructing a garment.

The embroidered design consists of a continuous pattern of diamonds, alternating rows of which are filled either with smaller diamonds or maze-like hook motifs. The rows of diamonds-within-diamonds are arranged in such a way that the larger diamonds overlap at the corners. One edge of the fabric is still visible, consisting of a three-lined zig-zag within a border of straight lines.
