Place of origin |
Consists of three lengths of pillow-made lace and three lengths of embroidered linen with reticella insertions. The pillow lace insertions (2 inches wide) have squares filled in with tape-lace imitating reticella work, consisting of a star-like pattern surrounding a more delicately worked centre. The squares are divided by two plaited lines with outward-turned half-circle pattern at both ends.
Embroidered linen with reticella insertions: the two wider insertions (4 inches wide each) consist of an identical graceful pattern of scrolling stems holding leaves and naturalistic tulips and marguerites. On both sides a border (1 inch wide each) of rows of stiff lily and marguerite sprigs. The narrower strip (3 inches wide) is patterned with a simplified version of the scrolling stem design running between rows of tulips and carnations. All three strips are decorated at irregular intervals by diamond-shaped insertions of reticella lace. The designs of these insertions (18 in all) are all different snowflake patterns. The embroidery is in white linen in long and short and satin stitches, with couched gimp outlines and boullion knots.
