Commemorative handkerchief of plate-printed cotton. The central scene depicts Jewish soldiers of the Prussian Army observing the Day of Atonement in an army camp at Metz, 1870 (5631 in the Jewish Calendar), during the Franco-Prussian War. This is printed in black on undyed cotton.
The border, which is printed in black and red, contains one roundel at each corner with one verse of a poem in German. There is an inscription in Hebrew and in German above the central scene and there is a medallion at the bottom with Hebrew and German text in which the scene is explained and the date given. The border also includes ferns and floral sprigs and two small cupid-like figures frame the top inscription.

| Historical context | There is a similar panel in the Jewish Museum, New York, which was given by Harry G. Friedman (F4364). This measures 65 cms by 67 cms and like the V&A piece is not hemmed along the top and bottom. It has the same verses in the same order but omits the German text from the lower inscription. A similar piece is in the Jewish Museum in London. This was given by Mrs Stanley Harris in 1968 (number 664 in their catalogue). In this one the poem is different. The lower inscription includes two initials - one on either side of the text. |
