This donkey and rider were made in Japan in the 1970s at a time when the production of clockwork toys was still robust. This toy, which represents Pinocchio on a donkey, springs along and tosses the rider about when wound up.

Boxed plush covered tinplate clockwork donkey with rider made in Japan in the 1970s
Physical description
1. donkey is of tinplate covered with light brown plush with a fur tail; white plastic nose; plastic eyes and white cloth lining in the ears. The rider is moulded pink vinyl painted red and blue with traces of brown. The reins is a length of red thread. The integral key protrudes from the left side of the body which houses the clockwork mechanism. When wound the donkey `springs along and tosses the rider about.
*On the back of the rider is JAPAN
2. box lid; card printed in colours to show the title; maker's mark and an illustration of the toy.
*The mark is a stylized eagle shape with the head up and the feet forming M shapes. It may equally by a stylized mountain shape with M M 3. box base; plain card
