Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A square tapestry woven panel attached to a linen cloth. Egyptian, possibly Akhmim, ca. AD400-600. The panel is in wool (11x60 tpc; maroon, green, red, yellow and pink). At the centre of the panel is a rose/cross icon (pink with red outline; yellow centre and green leaves). It is encircled with a circle in each corner. The circles are intertwined and create an enclosed guilloche. The circle outlines are approx. 10mm wide and are decorated with a simple guillloche outline in interlace. Each circle has a floral icon within it (tree or vines). The spaces between the circles are filled with club-shaped leaves. This is on an undyed background. Around this is a square border (40mm wide) which is decorated with guilloche in interlace. The panel is attached to a linen cloth (16x27 tpc (sys 1 x sys 2); tabby weave). The panel has some staining. The linen cloth is stained and with some holes. This is then attached to a modern fabric cotton backing.
