A textile fragment of a quail has been tapestry woven in purple and red wool on undyed tabby woven linen (Egyptian, ca. AD300-700). The upper decorated, square piece has been attached to a backing of square, undyed tabby linen.

The upper piece has selvedge on the right side; 115mm in height and 135mm in width; 12x34 tpc; thread dia. of 0.3mm. The quail is 110mm in height and 100mm wide. It's body is of woven purple wool with red wool forming the beak and legs. Feathers and the wing are indicated with undyed lines. The piece is attached to the backing with a couple of purple wool whip stiches on the upper left and upper right sides. The panel has possibly also been glued to the backing.

The backing square is 140mm in height and 140mm in width; 16x11 tpc (system 1:system 2); dia. 0.5mm; s spun. There is some light staining on the back of this piece and it is folded at one end.
