ca. 1860 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Triangular shawl of black Chantilly bobbin lace worked entirely in half stitch apart from some honeycomb fillings. The ground is a simple twisted mesh and the pattern is outlined and emphasised by a thick gimp thread.
The border is defined by a broad serpentine line crossed at intervals by bunches of oval leaves. The scalloped edge is lined with linked flower heads and between these and the serpentine line are a series of oval medallions containing flowers.
The main part of the shawl is divided into compartments by broad lines of curving vines and grapes which radiate from a medallion in the centre of the top edge. The compartments contain elaborate sprays of flowers.
