Nightgown
1700-1720 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Nightgown of quilted white linen, unlined. The quilting is worked in repeating, all-over, pattern of quatrefoils and simple flowers. The gown is open at the front with robings, and three linen ties on the inside of each side of the front, 12 cm from the front edges. There is a seam at the centre back above the waist, but no pleats. The skirt at the back is one piece below the waist, with an inverted box pleat in the centre. There is a waist seam and the skirts of the gown are pleated into the side seams. The sleeves are elbow-length with a simple cuff. The nightgown was probably made over from a quilted bed cover.
