Gown and Stomacher

1760-1770 (weaving), 1760 - 1770 (sewing), 1870 - 1910 (altered)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Gown and stomacher of maroon brocaded silk tobine with a sprigged pattern of small floral sprays carried out in sage green, white, red and yellow. The gown is in the English (tight-back) style with an open fronted bodice, with robings to the waist, trimmed with bands of ruched self-material. The sleeves are elbow-length with double scalloped and pinked sleeve ruffles. The bodice and sleeves are lined with linen. The skirt is made up of seven panels of silk; it is closed at the front and the centre front panel is open at the sides for fastening.

The stomacher is triangular and trimmed with four self-covered buttons stitched down the centre front.

Alterations made for fancy dress include unpicking and re-lining the robings and adding hooks and eyes to the robings and stomacher. The centre front panel of the gown skirt was originally pleated and bound with a tape to tie around the waist. It has been unpicked and lengthened and a modern ribbon added.
